Devin Gage posted a picture on his Instagram story this morning with a University of Rhode Island jersey bearing his last name. This isn’t surprising by any means, but definitely not something I saw coming.

Gage entered the NCAA transfer portal on March 4th as announced by Lawrence Kreymer on Twitter here.

As I’ve discussed before, Gage is a Chicago kid that arrived at DePaul with lots of potential and performed well from his first steps on the court with the Blue Demons. It’s disappointing he’s looking to leave DePaul, but I don’t blame him at all. He’s the only remaining player DePaul has from his Freshman class and he’s already had to deal with enough over the past few seasons.

He’s struggled with many injuries during his college career with the most recent being a season-ending hand injury. Gage had, “continued to play through discomfort” at the start of the 2019-2020 season, but “stopped playing when the pain was unbearable,” Gage told me.

Gage has announced that he is considering several schools at this point in time including University of Rhode Island, but also University of San Diego, and University of Hawaii. He would be able to begin playing with any of these teams immediately due to the transfer guidelines stated by the NCAA.

I’d love to see Gage end up somewhere that his potential can be seen. He played well for DePaul during his time with the Blue Demons and showed he can compete at a high level.

I think a team like Rhode Island would be a great fit for him. They’ve had success in recent years with a 21-9 finish last season. They also provide a veteran core of guys I think would fit right in with. With players such as Fatts Russell and Tyrese Martin around him, I believe Gage could really do well with the Rams.

Overall, if Gage can find a program that compliments his abilities well, he could have a chance at a career in basketball. I don’t think he’s NBA caliber, but I see him as someone who could go pro in Europe.
